Open Access & Copyright Policy

1. Open Access Statement

Trends and Reviews in Medicine and Biomedical Engineering (TRMBE) is a fully open-access journal. All articles are freely available online immediately upon publication, without subscription, registration, or payment of any kind by readers. In line with the Budapest Open Access Initiative definition, users are free to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, link to the full text, and use the articles for any other lawful purpose, subject only to the terms of the Creative Commons license described below.

The journal does not publish any content behind a paywall and does not impose an embargo period on any article.

2. Licensing

All articles in TRMBE are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0), https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/.

Under this license, anyone may:

  • Share – copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format;
  • Adapt – remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, including commercial use.

The only condition is attribution: users must give appropriate credit to the original authors and the journal, provide a link to the license, and indicate whether changes were made. Attribution should include the authors' names, the article title, the journal name, the year, volume, issue and page or article number, and the article's DOI.

The CC BY 4.0 license applies to the article as a whole, including its text, figures, tables, and supplementary material, except where an individual element is identified as reproduced from another source under different terms (see Section 5). The license is irrevocable; once an article is published, it cannot be withdrawn from open access, although it may be corrected or retracted in accordance with the journal's policies.

3. Copyright

Authors retain copyright of their work. On submission, authors grant the journal and its publisher, INATGI, a non-exclusive license to publish the article under the CC BY 4.0 license, to identify INATGI as the original publisher, to deposit the article in indexing and archiving services, and to distribute the article in any format or medium. Authors do not transfer copyright to the journal or the publisher.

Because the article is published under CC BY 4.0, authors may reuse their own published work in any way, including in theses, books, lectures, institutional repositories, and other publications, provided the original publication in TRMBE is cited.

By submitting a manuscript, the corresponding author confirms on behalf of all authors that:

  • the work is original and has not been published previously, in whole or in substantial part, and is not under consideration elsewhere;
  • all authors have approved the submission and agree to publication under the CC BY 4.0 license;
  • the authors hold the rights necessary to grant the license, including for any third-party material included in the manuscript;
  • the work does not infringe the copyright, privacy, or other rights of any third party and contains nothing defamatory or unlawful.

4. Author Self-Archiving

TRMBE places no restrictions on self-archiving. Authors may deposit any version of their article in institutional or subject repositories, on personal or laboratory websites, in preprint servers, or in academic networking sites, at any time and without embargo:

  • Submitted version (preprint) – may be posted before or during peer review. Authors are asked to disclose any preprint in the cover letter and to update the preprint record with a link to the published article once available.
  • Accepted manuscript – the version accepted for publication after peer review, before copyediting and typesetting, may be deposited immediately upon acceptance with a note that the article has been accepted by TRMBE.
  • Version of record – the final published PDF and HTML may be deposited and shared freely, with a citation and link to the original publication.

Authors are encouraged to include the article's DOI in any deposited version so that citations are attributed correctly.

5. Third-Party Material

Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission to reproduce or adapt any material – figures, tables, images, extended quotations, or data – for which they do not hold the copyright, and for ensuring that the permission covers publication under a CC BY 4.0 license. Where a copyright holder does not permit CC BY reuse, the material must be clearly identified in the caption as reproduced with permission, together with the source and the applicable rights statement, and it is excluded from the CC BY license that covers the rest of the article.

Material from other CC BY-licensed sources may be reused with appropriate attribution. Material licensed under more restrictive Creative Commons terms (for example, CC BY-NC or CC BY-ND) generally cannot be included without additional permission from the rights holder. Copies of permissions must be available to the editorial office on request.

6. Funder and Institutional Requirements

Immediate open access under CC BY 4.0, combined with author retention of copyright and unrestricted self-archiving, is compatible with the open-access requirements of most research funders and institutions, including those that require immediate open access, a CC BY license, and deposit in a designated repository. Authors should check the specific requirements of their funders and may contact the editorial office if a funder requires a particular statement or deposit arrangement.

7. Publication Fees

As an open-access journal with no subscription income, TRMBE covers the costs of peer review management, copyediting, typesetting, online hosting, indexing, and long-term preservation through an article processing charge (APC) of USD 500, payable on acceptance. There are no submission fees and no charges to readers. Full and partial waivers are available under the conditions described in the Author Guidelines, and the ability to pay has no influence on editorial decisions.

8. Persistent Identifiers and Preservation

Each published article is assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) registered with Crossref, ensuring a permanent, resolvable link to the version of record. Article metadata, including author ORCID iDs where provided, is deposited with Crossref and made openly available to indexing services and discovery tools.

To ensure that published content remains accessible in the long term, the journal deposits its articles with [name of preservation service, e.g., the PKP Preservation Network]. Articles are also available for harvesting via the journal's OAI-PMH interface.

9. Machine Access and Text and Data Mining

Because all articles are published under CC BY 4.0, they may be used for text and data mining, indexing, and other automated analysis without further permission, provided attribution is maintained. Structured metadata and full-text XML or HTML are made available to support such uses.

10. Corrections, Retractions, and Removal

Published articles form part of the permanent scholarly record and are not removed from the journal website except in exceptional circumstances, such as a legal requirement or a serious threat to public health. Errors are addressed through published corrections, and articles found to be unreliable or in breach of publication ethics are retracted with a linked notice, in accordance with COPE guidelines. Retracted articles remain online, clearly marked as retracted.

11. Permissions and Contact

No permission is required to reuse TRMBE content under the terms of the CC BY 4.0 license. Questions about this policy, requests relating to third-party material, or notifications of suspected copyright infringement should be sent to the Editorial Office at editorial@inatgi.net.
